Description of workshop:
Robots have increasingly been deployed in-the-wild, for both research and commercial purposes. For example, such robots may deliver food, provide information, or perform cleaning tasks. While these robots are often designed and well calibrated for their specific task, the variability of the people surrounding them means the robots are likely to face unexpected human behavior throughout their deployment.
As these unexpected behaviors are infrequent or related to failure, they often aren’t included or explicitly discussed in research papers or datasets. Additionally, the infrequency of these events means that often only experienced researchers can assimilate these instances into best practices and lessons learned for deploying robots in-the-wild. The goal of our workshop is to bring in various researchers working in “in the wild HRI” and discuss the potential lessons from these unexpected behaviors, identify potential new research directions, and provide lessons for researchers on possible unexpected behaviors that may happen in their system.
The workshop will be a half-day workshop with a mix of contribution talks, an expert panel, focused discussions, and poster sessions. A tentative program is listed here: https://sites.google.com/cornell.edu/hriinpublic/program
More information and submission details can be found on our website: https://sites.google.com/cornell.edu/hriinpublic/
Topics & Submission details:
We are soliciting contributions of short papers (2-4 pages) that describe your experiences related to deploying robots in the wild. While our workshop focuses on unexpected events (e.g., robot bullying/abuse, failures, outliers of the robot or the human’s behaviour) that you as a researcher or as a bystander witnessed, topics including but not limited to the following are welcome:
- Reports of outlier events during robot deployment
- Case studies of deployed robot systems.
- System description of deployed robot systems.
- Design and ideation behind deployed robot systems.
- Position papers on how to transition deployment of robotic systems from the lab into the wild.
- In-lab user studies exploring topics related to robot deployment.
Papers should be in IEEE conference format (LaTeX, Word). Accepted papers will be presented as posters during the workshop accompanied by a 3-5 minute lightning talk. Our workshop will utilize a rolling review process with a decision release about 2 weeks after submission.
Submit your papers here: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=hriip2024
Don't have time to write a paper?
You can submit an anecdote about an unexpected event in HRI at any time here: https://sites.google.com/cornell.edu/hriinpublic/submitting?authuser=0
