The Internet of Things in the Defence Industry: Challenges and Solutions for Military Security
In today's digital landscape, IoT applications stand out as invaluable assets, particularly in the realm of modern warfare, where the Internet of Military Things (IoMT) or Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) has emerged. These technologies involve equipping military-grade physical objects with advanced software and sensors to facilitate data exchange and task execution with heightened accuracy and speed. IoMT and IoBT enable soldiers to utilize a spectrum of equipment, including combat gear embedded with sensors capturing various biometrics.
Amidst the increasing complexity and unpredictability of military operations, IoT offers a strategic advantage, empowering defence personnel to respond effectively in tense situations. However, the security of IoT applications is paramount, especially within the defence sector, where breaches pose significant risks to both revenue and client trust. Security lapses in IoT applications can have dire consequences, potentially compromising sensitive data and eroding the confidence of stakeholders. Addressing these challenges requires a systematic and robust approach to safeguarding IoT applications and the underlying smart defence management systems. This proposed book aims to fill a critical gap in the literature by offering insights into securing IoT applications within defence organizations, emphasizing the importance of security and privacy, outlining current challenges, and proposing innovative solutions.
By focusing on decision-making processes informed by multiple criteria, this book seeks to provide comprehensive guidance for bolstering the security of IoT applications in defence contexts. By bringing together insights from researchers, practitioners, and experts in the field, this book seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding IoT deployment in defence contexts and to offer practical strategies for mitigating associated risks. Our motivation is to offer a state-of-the-art discussion and to introduce in this area new conceptual or practical advancements. We welcome chapters on the following topics, but not limited to:
- IoT-enabled applications in military operations
- Security vulnerabilities in IoT devices and networks
- Threats posed by cyber-physical attacks on military IoT systems
- Privacy concerns and data protection in IoT-driven defence environments
- Authentication and access control mechanisms for secure military IoT deployments
- Encryption and cryptographic techniques for safeguarding IoT communications
- Intrusion detection and prevention systems for military IoT networks
- Resilience and reliability of IoT-enabled defence systems
- Case studies and best practices in securing military IoT infrastructures
- Regulatory and policy considerations for IoT security in the defence sector
