About the Event
The Regional Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LREC) announces the International Workshop on NATURAL HAZARDS — NatHaz’25, with the theme “Geotechnical Risks”, to be held in Faial Island (Azores) on October 23rd and 24th, 2025.
In this fourth edition, the workshop will offer a good opportunity for a forum on several issues related to natural hazards, particularly geotechnical risks and hazards.
Due to its tectonic and volcanic environment, the Azores region is affected by most natural hazards, namely earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, coastal erosion, etc. So, it is the perfect place for professionals in those areas to discuss these problems. It will also be a great opportunity to closely contact the local reality concerning the natural risks that can affect that island and to visit several peculiar geological and volcanological aspects.
Where?
The International Workshop on NATURAL HAZARDS — NatHaz’25 will take place in the Azores Archipelago, on Faial island.
So this is an excellent occasion to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Faial Island. The beauty given by the volcanic nature of the Azores islands, its geographical, cultural and gastronomical specificities and the hospitality of the Azorean people, may also be a good justification for combining technical and scientific interest with the touristic aspects and taking advantage of this excellent opportunity to visit the island.
Known as Blue Island, Faial is a volcanic island that includes four geomorphological units: (1) Central Volcano, (2) Pedro Miguel Graben, (3) Horta Platform, and (4) Capelo Peninsula.
The magnificent bay of Horta (the capital) is a crossroads in the Atlantic, attracting sailboats from all over the world. It also offers a privileged view of the Pico mountain. It was on this island that the last volcanic eruption on land in the Azores took place — the Capelinhos volcano (1957-1958).
