In recent years, software services have become a key factor in the growth of any developed economy. This fact has sparked great interest among various economic players in developing a "Science of Services". In this context, academia, industry, and government aim to create principles, knowledge, methods, and techniques to articulate and execute their respective responsibilities and activities around the concept of service.
The Spanish Conference on Service Science and Engineering (JCIS), celebrating its 20th edition this year, serves as a forum for disseminating, discussing, and exchanging knowledge and experiences among the various actors involved. The focus is not only on new scientific advances but also on existing technologies related to service-oriented computing, business processes, new service engineering practices, and lessons learned through real-life experiences and case studies. In this context, JCIS fosters the meeting of communities related to the following AREAS OF INTEREST:
- Service Engineering
- Web Engineering
- Business Processes
- Cloud Computing and Services
- Internet of Things
- Pervasive Systems
- Quantum Computing in Services
- Smart Contracts and Blockchain (forum described below)
- Services for Health and Gerontechnology (forum described below)
Within these areas of interest, the conference focuses on the following TOPICS:
- Foundations of service- and/or process-oriented systems
- Formal methods and algorithms in service science and engineering
- Concepts, languages, and architectures for service science and engineering
- Proofs of concept, case studies, or prototypes centered on service engineering
- Design of service- and/or process-oriented information systems
- Empirical and reproducible evaluations of service- and/or process-oriented information systems
- Experiences applying service engineering in organizations
- Experiences transferring service science and engineering techniques to industry
- Use or advancement of service- and/or process-oriented methodologies to support digital innovation and transformation
- Industry challenges for service engineering
- Application of service science to improve organizational strategies
- Social challenges in any of the areas of interest
Additionally, this 20th edition of JCIS features the following two FORUMS, serving as meeting points for communities interested in Smart Contracts and Blockchain or in Health Services and Gerontechnology, encouraging the presentation of early-stage or well-established research results and experiences:
- Smart Contracts and Blockchain Forum: The governance of service-based systems is built on contracts and client agreements, which dictate how stakeholders interact based on legal provisions, terms of use, subscription models, and service level agreements. In complex service-based ecosystems, it is crucial to automatically analyze and operationalize the information contained in these contracts, adapting software to comply with their provisions and evolution, thereby turning them into smart contracts. The term smart contracts is traditionally linked to blockchain technology, where they have been applied to automate transactions within these networks, although the concept is not limited to such implementations. This forum welcomes contributions (of all submission types accepted in the conference) that focus on conceptual, technical, or applicability aspects of smart contracts, including contributions related to automatic analysis, operationalization, software adaptability, smart contracts in blockchains, alternative implementations, and other cross-cutting topics relevant to JCIS areas of interest.
- Health Services and Gerontechnology Forum: Population aging is a global reality. The increase in life expectancy presents numerous opportunities for individuals and the communities they inhabit. However, these opportunities largely depend on the health status of older adults. In the coming years, ensuring that seniors enjoy the best possible health conditions will be one of the greatest social challenges, and technology will play a crucial role. The JCIS community has demonstrated its ability to generate knowledge that can be applied to improving the quality of life for older adults. This forum will present contributions (of all submission types accepted in the conference) from the JCIS community related to this field. Additionally, the forum will serve as a meeting point for the Iberian chapter of the ISG (International Society for Gerontechnology). This scientific society encourages and promotes technological innovations in products and services that address the aspirations and needs of older adults, based on scientific knowledge of aging processes. This meeting will bring together both communities and highlight the latest advancements in gerontechnology.
TYPES OF CONTRIBUTIONS
The types of contributions that can be submitted to this edition of the conference, in Spanish or English, include:
- Long papers: This modality is especially aimed at researchers who wish to share their ongoing research with the community, seeking feedback and establishing collaborations with related researchers. Papers in this category should be between 8 to 10 pages in SISTEDES format (https://github.com/sistedes/sistedes.template).
- Short papers: This modality includes (i) ongoing work, (ii) reflections/position statements, (iii) tool demonstrations, (iv) R&D projects, and (v) contracts with companies. The goal is to present early-stage projects or works, reflections that encourage debate, or tools developed in relation to one of the conference's areas of interest. Short papers should be between 3 to 4 pages in SISTEDES format (https://github.com/sistedes/sistedes.template). Demonstrations must include a link to a demonstration video and require a presentation during the conference.
- Business experiences: This contribution type is geared towards companies wishing to share challenges, experiences, and/or solutions in the areas of interest at the conference. These challenges and/or experiences can serve as a collaboration bridge between academia and industry. (a) A paper of 1 to 2 pages summarizing the experience briefly in SISTEDES format (https://github.com/sistedes/sistedes.template) is required, to be published in the conference proceedings, or (b) a presentation of up to 10 slides in PDF format, which will not be included in the proceedings. In both cases, the contribution must be presented in person during the conference.
- Previously published (relevant) papers: In line with CoARA principles (https://coara.eu/coalition/guiding-principles/), the conference welcomes relevant papers published in top-tier journals or conferences between January 2023 and the submission deadline, provided they have not been previously submitted or are under review at SISTEDES. The aim is twofold: to publicize these works at the conference and to offer them as guidance to the community. Relevant works are considered those published in high-ranked journals or conferences, those with a high citation count, or any other indicator demonstrating the work's quality. A paper is considered published when it is available through its DOI. A maximum one-page summary in SISTEDES format (https://github.com/sistedes/sistedes.template) is required, indicating the title, authors, a summary of the contribution, keywords, an indication of the publication’s impact, and a reference to the original publication along with the DOI link. A digital copy of the publication must also be included. Only the summary will be published in the conference proceedings.
To avoid copyright violations, submitted works must be significantly different from those already published in other forums. All submissions will be formally reviewed to assess their relevance, originality, technical quality, and fit with the conference themes.
PROCEEDINGS
The full proceedings of the conference will be published electronically (https://hdl.handle.net/11705/JCIS), with a corresponding handle. To facilitate the dissemination of works through inclusion in the SISTEDES digital library and other university repositories, authors of accepted contributions will be required to grant a Creative Commons (CC) license for their works. Authors can choose from any of the six existing CC licenses (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/), with the conference organizers recommending the use of the CC BY license.
The authors of the best papers will receive a diploma recognizing their contribution.
