The Effect of Temperature on Strain Measurement Based on SMS (Singlemode–Multimode–Singlemode) Fiber Structure and OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)

Abstract

SMS (singlemode–multimode–singlemode) fiber structure has been developed for various sensor types. OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) can measure power loss each length unit and detect failure of the optical fiber network system. In this research, it has been developed a strain measurement technique using the SMS and the OTDR. Optical fiber sensor is sensitive to the environment temperature change. The environment temperature change can cause error to the strain measurement. This experiment investigated the effect of environment temperature change to the strain measurement and investigated it's correction aspect. Characterization of the SMS fiber structure’s strain sensor has been carried out, with the multimode fiber (MMF) length of 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7 cm and operational wavelength of 1310 nm. Strain testing was set by giving a displacements from 0 to 1000 µm to the SMS with an increament of 100 µm. The temperature variation of 37, 47, 57, 67°C was given to the SMS fiber structure. Based on the experiment result, in the multimode with length from 5.5 cm to 7 cm can be used as a strain sensor. In the MMF length of 6.5 cm and at a strain of 1852 µε, a temperature change of 10o C induced a strain measurement error of 448 µε. In this research, the error measurement can be reduced by adding on SMS fiber structure temperature sensor to the strain measurement system. Implementation of the SMS fiber structure temperature sensor for the strain measurement of 1852 µε can reduced the measurement error from 319 µε into 142 µε a temperature variation of 10°C.
