Optimization of the Performance of a Photovoltaic Module by an Intelligent Solar Tracker

EasyChair Preprint 7670

8 pagesDate: March 29, 2022

Abstract

Solar energy is a key factor for the socio-economic development because it is renewable and non-polluting. However, the efficiency of solar panels is still low nowadays. The present work aims at optimizing the performance of solar panels by designing, realizing and implementing an intelligent solar tracker. The realized solar tracker includes light sensors, a microcontroller, an actuator motor and a mechanical articulated system. Experiments were conducted at the University of Ngaoundéré with two identical photovoltaic solar panels: one static and tilted by the latitude of the location and the other armed with the realized tracker. The results of the implementation of the proposed solar tracker show that it requires little maintenance, has an energy consumption rate of about 0.22% and 0.14% compared to the energy gain obtained respectively for a cloudy sky and a clear sky. Taking into account this consumption of the tracker, the rate of energy increase relative to the fixed PV module is 22.45% and 25.86% for cloudy and sunny sky respectively. These important results can significantly increase the efficiency of solar power plants.
