Jambur; Surviving Through Changes While Reviewing Modernity

Abstract

The problem of architectural preservation is how to defend artifacts from destruction with various concepts, theories, and methods related to changing times. The existence of the Karo architecture which is endangered leaves jambur which is still preserved because it is able to change for example the function and its physical composition but still shows its authenticity as Karo architecture. Jambur is the Karo community's traditional meeting hall which is tied to a large family, clan, who are united in this ethnic. When building units other than jambur, namely si waluh jabu, geriten and others damaged and destroyed, jambur can avoid it by surviving through eclectic, imitative and mimicry design concepts, in that performs and function through transformation according to the wishes of the era and according to the interpretations of the inhabitants. The method is discussed based on a qualitative research of the histori of Karo architecture and the theory of pleasure ​​architecture, with cases in the Berastagi - Kabanjahe and surrounding. The results show that jambur has been change in the shape, space and function which is more in line with the wishes of the community. The changes and events that occur indicate that jambur is undergoing modernization in the context of sublimation until it reaches the jouissance. In the end jambur was sustainable by various radical ways it became an iconic artefact.
